Let us introduce you to our journey. Check out about our experience and learn more about Costa Tropical.

During the last year we have been reading, travelling, entering in contact with people living in area, and trying to start a relationship with Costa Tropical.

We would like to share our knowledge with those who are interested in Spain and would like to have a similar experience. This is the right website/blog for them but also for people who are just curious about the places we have discovered during this year of research, and for all those things we are still discovering, step by step.

The following posts of this page will tell you something about how the towns of Costa Tropical are organized and managed by a political body which has among its aims that of optimizing both monetary and natural resources: la Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa Tropical.

We will give you an idea about the province of Granada from the landscape wonders of Sierra Nevada to the beauty of the coast, to the artistic and historical value of this area. From the World Heritage Site of la Alhambra to the white small villages of the Alpujarra, the architectural features of the buildings of the province of Granada we’ll tell you about the Moorish roots of this area.

In these are places nature has been generous with mountains, sea, and rich in the variety of agriculture due to the peculiar subtropical micro-climate that mitigates the summer and winter seasons and making this land especially attractive for a tourism that, till date has not spoiled the Costa Tropical, and is made above all of people enjoying the place as it is.

The towns belongint to the of Costa Tropical are organized in a Mancomunidad. A mancomunidad is a volunteer association formed by local entities – in this case towns, but it can be organized also at regional or other territorial level – sharing a common goal. A mancomunidad de municipios is an association of towns that aim to develop together some projects or share certain resources. In other words, they tend to optimize common resources.

One of the most important resources for the Costa Tropical is the water. It is one of the main goals of the Mancomunidad de municipios de la Costa Tropical to optimize the reserves of water, aiming to ensure the successful employment of the hydric basins for the local needs of drinking water, but also, and importantly, for the local agriculture. Agriculture is, in fact, the activity that guarantees the main economy income of the whole Andalusia, for local consume and for participating with an important share to the European economy.

During the first ten months of 2022, the export of fruits and vegetables in Andalusia have marked a new record, over 10% compared to the same period of the previous year (2021). More info are available at the link to Andalusia Trade web site

Another important resource of Costa Tropical is tourism. In 2015, Mancomunidad Costa Tropical has invested in a Strategic plan for developing tourism (PET Costa Tropical). Part of the goals have been already achieved.

Granada is one of the main towns of Andalusia. It is the capital of its are (Province). The most famous attraction of Granada city is without any doubts la Alhambra, wonderful Moorish architectural piece of art and World Heritage Site.

The province of Granada is a real paridise for tourists. It is a rare natural theater boasting mountains and a beautiful coastal area characterized by subtropical weather.

The Park of Sierra Nevada has the highest peak in Mulhacén, at 3479 mt above the sea level. The Natural Park of Sierra Nevada is one of the main touristic attractions of the province of Granada.

The mountain of the Sierra Nevada represent one of the resources of water for the agriculture.

From the high mountains starts a breath taking succession of gullies that arrives to the sea. This area, between the Sierra Nevada and the Mediterranean coastal region is the Alpujarra. White villages characterized by narrow streets tell us over one thousand years of history, showing their legacies to the Moorish time in Spain.

The Costa Tropical boasts one of the best climates of the whole Mediterranean area. The mountains offering protection against the Northern winds and the southern air currents blowing from the African continent create a micro climate that makes it possible to enjoy about 300 days of beautiful weather a year.

The subtropical weather is characterized by mild (not too hot) summers, and mild temperate winters.

This stunning weather guarantees the possibility to exploit tourism during all the year. The area, however, is much less crowded than other Spanish destinations giving the possibility of relaxing and enjoyable holidays far from the noise and chaos.

Sugar cane used to be one of the top products Costa Tropical. Today, in this region of Europe, it is possible the cultivation of tropical fruits. Along the coastal line, avocados, mangos and chyrimoya are among the main variety of fruits. In the Eastern part of the Costa Tropical, in the area known as Sierra de la Contraviesa, it is possible to meet cultivation of vines and almonds.

Sustainable Tourism? Castell de Ferro wants it now!

Castell de Ferro becomes the first town in the Province of Granada and among the first 10 in Andalusia, to audit the beaches (Cambriles and el Sotillo) with the label of Touristic Sustainability granted by the Institute for Touristic Quality of Spain (Instituto para la Calidad Turística Española). The Mayor of Castell de Ferro, Toñi Antequera, confirms a commitment started when the town obtained the mark of Tourism of Quality represented by the Blue Flag. The mark of Touristic Sustainability is part of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
